Director of the Center for Pharmacology and the Institutes I (acting) and II for Pharmacology


Prof. Fischer was born in Marburg in 1971. After studying pharmacy at the Philipps University of Marburg, he received his license to practice as a pharmacist in 1997. He then studied medicine at the Westphalian-Wilhelms University of Münster, where he obtained his doctorate (Ph.D.) in 2000 with distinction "summa cum laude".

From 2001 to 2004, Prof. Fischer was a postdoctoral fellow at Harvard Medical School (Department of Neurosurgery, Children's Hospital) and followed a call for a junior professorship in Experimental Neurology (W1) at Ulm University Hospital. In 2010 and 2011, Prof. Fischer received three further calls (W2) to the University Hospital Düsseldorf, University Hospital Regensburg, and University Hospital Würzburg and became a University Professor of Experimental Neurology in Düsseldorf. After further calls to Philipps University Marburg (2014) and Ruhr University Bochum (2017), he took over as the Chair of Cell Physiology (W3) at the Faculty of Biology and Biotechnology in Bochum. Prof. Fischer received several awards for his scientific work in therapy development to promote nerve regeneration, such as the MSD-Chibret-Millennium Award in the field of ophthalmology and the research award of the German Foundation for Paraplegia.

Since 2022, Prof. Fischer has been the Director of the Center for Pharmacology at the University Hospital Cologne and is a member of the Drug Commission of the hospital.
