Teaching in pharmacology

Pharmacotherapy is essential for the treatment of almost all diseases. In some cases, it is even the only possible and effective treatment. The importance of drug therapy has increased dramatically in the past, which is also reflected in rising costs for the pharmaceutical sector. In 2012, we spent around €30 billion on drugs in Germany, and approximately 633 million drug prescriptions were registered.

Pharmacology provides a basic understanding of the effects of pharmaceuticals, drugs, and poisons and imparts necessary knowledge for physicians' sensible use of medicines. In class, we introduce essential drugs for everyday medical practice. We cover such important aspects as drug selection, efficacy, adverse effects, dosage, drug interactions, and, last but not least, the cost of therapy.

Pharmacology is embedded in the various sections of the medical curriculum in the form of appropriate teaching formats. These include lectures, small group teaching (PbL), workshops, and joint events with clinical subjects. In addition, we also offer special teaching events in the context of biology and chemistry studies.
The Center for Pharmacology attaches great importance to medical didactics and is, therefore, among other things, actively involved in implementing appropriate training events for the Medical Faculty.

Information about the events can be reached via the left navigation bar. If you have any questions about the courses offered by our center, please get in touch with the teaching coordinator Dr. Matthes.

Seminar dates in the summer semester of 2023

The Center for Pharmacology holds a scientific institute seminar at approximately weekly intervals. Usually, the meeting takes place on Tuesdays at 17:00 and can also be attended via Zoom. At this event, own research projects, results of colleagues from our and related fields of work, as well as pharmacological or medical topics of overriding importance, are presented. As far as possible, the individual events are registered with the North Rhine Medical and Pharmaceutical Associations as continuing education measures. In case of approval, 2 continuing education points of category A are usually awarded (90 minutes of lecture and discussion).

Tuesdays at 17:00 in the seminar room (1st-floor room 029)
of the Center for Pharmacology

The seminars are certified by the Apothekenkammer and Ärztekammer Nordrhein and are awarded two CME points.

Human Medicine

The Center for Pharmacology conducts two main courses, the Subject Block (FB) Pharmacology (second clinical semester) and the Cross-Sectional Block Clinical Pharmacology/ Pharmacotherapy (QB9, fifth clinical semester). The central element in each case is small group instruction in the form of problem-based learning (PbL). Lectures on essential topics in pharmacology and drug therapy are also offered here. In addition to FB Pharmacology and QB9, the Center for Pharmacology is involved (partly in a leading role) in a large number of other teaching events, including fields of competence in pre-clinic and clinic, elective courses, patient presentations together with the clinics for internal medicine, the PJ preparation week "PJ-STArT-Block" or the medicinal therapy meeting for PJ students.

Registration for courses and examinations is done via KLIPS 2.0. Information and materials on the courses of the Center for Pharmacology are available to students on the teaching/learning platform ILIAS. If you have any questions about our teaching, please contact our teaching secretariat: pharmakologie-lehre@uk-koeln.de or +49 221-478 6053.

Drug Discovery and Development Master's Program

The master's program "Drug Discovery and Development" offers excellent opportunities to qualify for a drug discovery and development job, either in an academic environment or in the pharmaceutical industry.

The research-oriented program is offered by the University of Cologne and the Cologne University of Applied Sciences (TH Köln) and leads to a joint degree from both universities.

The taught skills enable students to work in research and development of innovative pharmaceuticals along the entire value chain. The program is aimed at graduates of relevant courses of study in the chemical, biological or medical-pharmaceutical fields. After successfully completing the program, students can immediately enter the pharmaceutical research and development field or pursue a doctorate. Possible fields of work as young scientists are in the pharmaceutical industry, national and international regulatory authorities, and academia.

For further information, please visit the website of the master's program, Drug Discovery, and Development

Dentistry

According to the dental licensing regulations (ZÄApprO), pharmacology is a component of dental studies and the state examination. Special features in comparison to the study of human medicine result from provisions in the dental professional regulations and the law on dentistry practice. The teaching of dental students is coordinated with this at the Center for Pharmacology. In weekly lectures, pharmacological basics, properties, and application of essential drugs, as well as their prescription, are worked out.

Registration for courses and examinations is done via KLIPS 2.0. Information and materials on the courses of the Center for Pharmacology are available to students on the teaching/learning platform ILIAS. For questions regarding teaching, please get in touch with our teaching secretariat: pharmakologie-lehre@uk-koeln.de or +49 221 478 88729. For questions directly regarding the course mentioned above within the framework of the study of dentistry, please get in touch with Prof. Dr. med. Carsten Müller (c.mueller@uni-koeln.de; + 49 221 478 5066).

Midwifery Sciences

As part of the BSc program in Applied Midwifery Sciences, the Center for Pharmacology is involved in the basic module 06 "Biomedical Basics II." Prospective midwives are taught the basics of general pharmacology, focusing on drug use in the obstetric context (including tocolytics, uterotonics, and analgesics). Special features of drug therapy in the sensitive phase of life from pregnancy up to and including lactation are highlighted. Knowledge of mode of action and effects and side effects, including possible countermeasures in the peripartum range of action, is of particular importance. The module is offered annually in the summer semester, includes interactive lectures on the part of pharmacology, and is concluded with an examination. The hospital pharmacy supports lectures on dosage forms as well as the production and storage of drugs. In the basic module 06, "Biomedical Basics II," the gynecological clinic and the KISS also teach the basics of pathogens, their transmission path, and corresponding hygiene measures.
