Experimental pharmacology uses model systems to investigate a (potential) drug substance or formulation's pharmacological properties. These investigations usually take place before the clinical testing of the drug and include in vitro and in vivo studies. Thus, drug testing is performed on enzymes, cell cultures, and tissue samples, as well as on animals.
